Nose Piece? Yes or No

UPDATE (Dec 01, 2020): Switching to flat nose bridge strips!

Now that rust-free, flat aluminum nose bridge strips are readily available, we’ll be switching away from the wire system we previously used.  Flat strips are much more stable, comfortable, and unlikely to warp or tarnish in the wash.

Accordion and Ziggurat masks are available with or without a bendable concealed wire aluminum strip see above) over the nose area.  This nose-piece can create a closer, more gap-free fit.  You can see photos of this in action.

However, there are some caveats.  You may find the nose-piece uncomfortable or unnecessary, depending on the shape of your nose and face.  For example, if you have a very low bridge of the nose, it’s probably kind of redundant.  On the other hand, if you have a tall, sharp nose, you may only be able to achieve a close enough fit with one.

If your glasses (or sunglasses) tend to fog up with other masks, a nose-piece may help by improving the seal around the bridge of your nose.

Will the Nose Piece Rust?

UPDATE (Dec 01, 2020): Our new aluminum strips won’t rust.

We tested the metal of the (previously used) nose-piece and found no evidence of rusting even after prolonged wet conditions, but we can’t absolutely guarantee that it will never happen.  If rusting DOES happen after repeated washing, it shouldn’t interfere with the mask’s effectiveness, but it may stain light-coloured fabrics.

Warning: if you like to use bleach, be aware that it can cause any metals to degrade prematurely.   Read our FAQ on why you don’t need bleach your mask, unless you just feel like it.

Also, if you want to use bleach on your masks, you may want to stick to white cotton only, as colours and many fibres do not take kindly to being bleached.

Still Not Sure?

If you’re still not sure if you want a nose-piece or not— or if you’re still wondering which mask styles might be a better fit for you — consider getting one of each kind and finding out for sure.  You can always sanitize and donate the masks you don’t like to someone in need, such as to a local shelter (and we’ll donate a mask for each one you buy, so you’ll be helping a lot of people).
